cathryn avison ltd

In October 2017 I gained a work placement with Cathryn Avison as a studio assistant and went on to working as a freelancer for her. Cathryn is a freelance embroiderer creating bespoke embroidery designs for film, television and theatre.

My jobs have been:

  • Helping with day-to-day film, theatre and fashion work, involving bead application, hand embroidery and embellishments

  • Learning how to work in a fast-paced environment to meet deadlines

  • Experienced dialogue between costume designer and supervisor

disney - aladdin (2019)

Costume designer: Jasmine Swan

  • The live action re-make of Disney's Aladdin was released in 2019. I was fortunate enough to have worked on the production of a costume that Princess Jasmine (Naomi Scott) wore in the film.  This was the first project I worked on for Cathryn Avison. Newly introduced to embroidery and bead work, I worked on the gold and light blue beads, at the bottom of the eye, leading up to (when I was more confident) the dark blue nearer the top.

Disney - maleficent mistress of evil (2019)

Costume designer: Ellen Mirojnick

  • The live action re-make of Disney's Maleficent-Mistress Of Evil ,was released in 2019.  I had a chance of working on a couple of the costumes in this film, thanks to Cathryn. There was a total of 3 dresses that I worked on, these were Aurora's (Elle Fanning) nature pink dress and her blue leaf dress, as well as Queen Ingrith's (Michelle Pfeiffer) dinner dress.

  • Aurora (Elle Fanning) nature dress: I cut out 3D flowers that Cathryn had embroidered and applied these to the fabric through stitch and beading.

  • Aurora (Elle Fanning) Blue leaf dress: I also created 3D daisy chains. this required sewing the rouleau to the flower.

  • Queen Ingrith ( Michelle Pfeiffer) dinner dress: I created beadwork for this dress, by applying beads to the pattern on the fabric.

netflix - the crown (season 3)

Costume designer: Amy Roberts

  • The Crown season 3 was released in November 2019. I had the pleasure of working on the beading for Queen Elizabeth 11 poster dress. This dress was my main job for 1 summer as it would take a while to bead all of the front panel of the dress. I really enjoyed beading the main flowers as these included Swarovski beads which are beautiful.

disney - mulan (2020)

Costume designer: Bina Daigeler

  • My first experience of gold-work embroidery was when I worked on Disney's live action re-make of Mulan (2019) for Cathryn Avison. This was a new skill for me so I got shown how to do it by Cathryn by guided every step of the way until I knew what I was doing. At the beginning I found it challenging but now I really enjoy it and it is one of my favourite hand embroidery techniques

the royal opera house - lessons in love and violence

Costume designer: Vicki Mortimer

  • The Royal Opera House performance of Lessons in love and violence was performed in May 2018. I was able to work on the King's (principal baritone) suit. I  helped with the bead work on the sleeve of the suit, by applying the beads on top of Cathryn's embroidery.
